How do payment gateways work?

Payment gateways are the middlemen between merchants and banks, facilitating the approval of credit card and electronic check transactions. When a customer enters their payment information on a merchant’s website, the payment gateway encrypts the data and sends it to the bank for approval. Once the bank approves or declines the transaction, the payment gateway sends the response back to the merchant.
