A NameNode in Hadoop is referred to as the node, where Hadoop is capable of storing all the information regarding the file location in HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System).  In simple terms, a NameNode is a centerpiece or central aspect of the HDFS file system.  It is also responsible for keeping the record of all the files in the file system and also track the file data through the cluster or multiple machines.
