How do I get health insurance?

You can get health insurance in a few different ways:

Employer-sponsored health plan
Many people have employer-sponsored plans. This means that your employer offers health insurance, and will likely cover a portion of the premium. You pay some of the cost, with your employer taking the money out of your paycheck. You might also pay some out-of-pocket expenses, such as a copayment or coinsurance amount, toward your medical care when you receive it.

Brokers
You may also be able to buy your own health insurance. Some people do so through a broker—an insurance specialist—who can search for insurance that works for your income and your health concerns.

Health Insurance Marketplace/HealthCare.gov
HealthCare.gov sells government-approved qualified health plans that individuals and businesses can review and buy. You can visit HealthCare.gov to look at health plan benefits and compare features and costs.

For more information on the Marketplace, please visit the Understanding Health Care Reform section of our website.

Medicare
Medicare is a health plan offered by the federal government for people 65 and older, and some people with disabilities. You have some choices about your coverage, and you might have to pay some monthly premiums. This cost is usually much lower than private health plans. For details, please visit medicare.gov.

Medicaid
Medicaid is a health plan financed by federal, state, and local funds for some low-income people, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. If you live in Virginia, please visit medicaid.gov to find out if you qualify.
