Route tables come up with a set of rules, called routes, which are used to determine where the network traffic is to be directed.

The route table controls the traffic for the subnet, so it must be associated with a route table. Each route table can be associated with multiple subnets, but a subnet is associated with only one route table.

After creating a VPC, it comes with a default route table called main route table. You can also add custom route tables and define rules. It is recommended to associate new custom route table to each subnet that you create, as it explicitly controls how each subnet routes outbound traffic.

Note: You cannot delete the main route table, but can be replaced with a custom route table.
